The University of Music and Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig (HMT) emerged in 1992 from the merger of the oldest German universities of music (1843) and theater (1953, with roots in the Leipzig drama school founded in 1875/1876).
About 175 years ago, the opening of a musical educational institution for the best possible training of one’s own offspring was a revolutionary idea – today it is important to continue doing justice to this core mission in the midst of a rapidly changing, globalization-oriented world without forgetting the traditional roots.
Comprehensive education as a core mission
HMT Leipzig understands its core mission in the professional training of professional musicians, professional music teachers and professional actors at the highest international level. The basis of comprehensive musical education is already evident in Mendelssohn’s founding concept (1840); To this day, the HMT Leipzig stands for innovative and future-oriented teaching and learning, it gives broad scope to individual support and sees the personal profile of its students as an important goal of artistic education.
The study programs are coordinated in theory and practice and offer a high degree of study quality from an artistic, scientific and educational point of view.
